Troop 1559 is a boy-run troop. Boy leaders plan and execute their own program, with parent guidance and support. New Scouts begin with small jobs under the guidance of more experienced Scouts. As their skills and knowledge improve, they are given more responsibilities.
Learning leadership skills is one of the most important products of being a Boy Scout. Troop 1559 has a Junior Leader Training program for the boy leaders. Each Scout will learn the skills required to carry out his job in the Troop and will learn how to pass those skills on to other boys.
Scouts in the Troop elect a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), who heads the Patrol Leaders' Council (PLC). The SPL, with the help and advice of the Scoutmaster and elected Patrol Leaders, appoints one or more Assistant SPLs, Quartermaster, Instructors, Troop Guides, Scribe, and other Troop Officers. These officers, along with the Patrol Leaders, make up the PLC. This group meets monthly with the Scoutmaster to plan Troop meetings and outings.
The Troop is made up of smaller groups of 5
to 9 Scouts, called Patrols. Each Patrol has a Patrol Leader elected by the
Patrol members. He represents the Patrol at the PLC and keeps his Patrol
informed.
